In God Underground Richard Wurmbrand Charles Foley Books
This is a powerful book. While reading I quickly became aware of how spoiled and ungrateful I can be. I will always be thankful for my food, warmth, water, and relationships. I have also learned the value of having scripture memorized and hidden deep in my heart to bring up when there is no bible. This man spent 3 years in solitary confinement and drew on Christ's strength beating after beating. He was in prison for his faith for 14 years. His love for those that tortured him savagely can only be through the love God gives. My son recommended this book and now I too am recommending it to others.

In God Underground Richard Wurmbrand Charles Foley Books Reviews
A true story about following Jesus Christ in suffering and overcoming the evil. The book also reveals much of the lies and evil works done by Communists during the 20th century in the Eastern Europe.
I first read "The Preachers Wife" by Richards wife Sabina Wurmbrand. Her book was well written and told her story of Faith, imprisonment, and life in Romania in the 50s and 60s. While Sabina spent several years in prison for her Faith, Richard also spent many years in prison. It was astounding to me the amount of torture and brainwashing they both endured for their Faith in Christ. Both books took me on a journey that made me examine my own Faith in Christ. Honestly, I don't know if I could've held up under the torture and amount of brainwashing that Richard and Sabina experienced, however through the telling of their stories they both demonstrate that through Christ anything is possible. I recommend reading both books. They provide inspiration for living life as a Christian and how many souls can be won for Christ in the most terrible situations.
The author went into greater detail on the persecution that he went through than in Tortured for Christ. At times I grimaced as I read the horrifying accounts of what Rev. Wurmbrand witnessed and endured for Christ. If you do not come away with a greater sense of your own failings, then, sadly, your heart is as hard as a rock. Could any of us go through what they did and still remain loyal to Jesus? As American's, I would say I agree with the Reverend's assessment in Tortured for Christ, and that is America sleeps. We sit back and do nothing, thinking this could not happen to us. Better read the Master's words in Matthew 2535-40. That is the judgment awaiting this country and those who claim to be a child of God. There are now 64 Hostile Nations and with the current assault on Christianity, America could be next.
Must read for any Christian searching for the true, genuine, selfless act of becoming a servant for Gods children- in imitation of our Saviour and Lord the messiah. Never have I encountered such soul searching- can we suffer for our brothers and sisters to protect them from Satans ministers determined to destroy their faith by torture, starvation and unbelievable human degradation and humiliation? Wurmbrand showed humans can become like Christ - love is the greatest commandment and we as Christs followers must be determined to allow Gods word to create strength in our hearts to withstand all the evil machinations of the devil.
If anyone thinks that Christians today don't face persecution not unlike that of the early church they should read this book. In many ways this book is hard to read because it shows in clear example the depth to which humankind can sink for self preservation or search of position and power, but in more ways than that it shows the indomitable spirit of one who has made a commitment to stand up for what he believes is spiritually and morally right and the strength that God gives stand firm in the face of otherwise unbearable circumstances.
A harsh but inspiring read. When people like the author demonstrate Christian charity, courage, compassion, and faith under the most extreme and dehumanizing circumstances, and then write about it, you get a book like this. For this reason, it is a gem; Theological and Christian books of inspiration abound, the kinds of books that fan the flames of faith and make us feel good, but far fewer books demonstrate what a sincere Christian life looks like under severe duress. Isn't that when the rubber really hits the road for Christians? I highly recommend this book. Another book of this kind worth reading is "Father Arseny, 1893-1973 Priest, Prisoner, Spiritual Father Being the Narratives Compiled by the Servant of God Alexander Concerning His Spiritual Father".
I don't like fiction that portrays hopelessness, atrocity after atrocity, or depressive story after depressive story, but Wurmbrand's book is true, about his years in a communist prison in Romania. Christians will like the book and will be amazed at Wurmbrand's fidelity to Jesus. Non-Christian readers may become Christians, may refuse to finish the book, or may side with the communists as they hate Mr. Wurmbrand because he exposes their hypocrisy.
One passage in the book describes an eery exchange similar to recent ones in our own US today. Wurmbrand asks a cell mate, a former Romanian Minister of Justice, and a still loyal communist, ". . . How can you hope to go on using people and then throwing them away?"
The answer, "Because they're stupid."
Wurmbrand never gives up, never stops hating communism, never stops loving communists, and never stops loving Jesus. He died in 2001, but still today puts me to shame, strengthens my love for Jesus and others, and might do the same for you. He writes a five star book. David Carlyle, "Billy Thomas Forever Fearless."
