Men against the Sea was a real adventure story. I've often read about the journey of the "Bounty" but never about the epic journey of the longboat, hopelessly overloaded, skippered by Captain Bligh. He has a fascinating personality and I would have hated to be on the "Bounty" before the mutiny. Quick of temper, abusive, following orders without thought of anything but, made him an unlikable character. However, with privation and survival paramount, he shows another side of his personality. I have read about his exploits as Governor of Sydney in the early stages of the colony. Even on the journey to Australia to take up the appointment, he was abusive and overbearing to the Captain on whose ship he sailed - exerting his authority and trying to take command. No, he doesn't come across as a nice man, yet reading Men against the Sea showed another facet of his complex personality. I read this book quickly - it was so good!

What is there not to like?
Very exiting story! Brave men, and emotional...
The second of the Bounty trilogy follows the course of the adrift crew of the Bounty towards Timor. A very good read and the author has succeeded in presenting a realistic account of what occurred to the 19 seaman cast adrift after the mutiny. Some licence taken by the author but nevertheless a great read.
I received the book on 8 September 2018. Though there is no issue with the text as far as I have found, the cover printing is utterly atrocious! I can't conceive of how such an error was allowed.
This is the harrowing yet fascinating story of Bligh and 18 loyal sailors who were cast off the Bounty in a 23-foot launch with limited supplies and no cover. Somehow they survived stormy seas, rains, hostile natives, and starvation while travelling 3600 miles to a Dutch port. If you love adventure and danger and human conflict in your seafaring novels, this is must-read.
This picks up the story of Captain Bleigh when he is cast off the
HMS Bounty in a long boat by Fletcher Christian. Bleigh rows half way
accross the Pacific under very great difficulty avoiding easier alternatives just to reach a British port. He put his small crew in
great danger, lack of food and water, and even faces dangerous natives
on some of the islands he comes accross in his journey. I first read this
book in Junior High in the 1950's, when reading was a boar to me. I
couldn't put it down and really established my love for reading.I gave
an oral book report and got an A when I described that as times got
tougher for Captian Bleigh, he grew stronger as his men got weaker,
with his determination to return to Britian to see that the mutineers
were brought to justice.
I had actually enjoyed this book the best of the trilogy, so when I found the first and 3rd for a total of $1 at a library book sale, I went looking to find a copy of this one to match the set. This purchase came close. It is a newer edition, but the same physical size. Good condition, not smelly. The only thing was the picture did not match what I got. I hoped for a copy with the displayed dust cover to match the other 2, but what I got had no dust cover. Perhaps I read the description incorrectly? But, with an internet image, some photo-shopping and a trip to the office supply store to print on large format paper, I made my own dust cover to get a visually cohesive look to the set. So I am HAPPY!
