This is the first book in a long time that made me cry. I loved it so much that I bought a copy and provided it to an Anglican priest (female) at her confirmation. I teach creative writing and assign it often to my students. It's normally met with mixed reactions-- you get half the class who feel their life has changed, and half the class who just don't and won't get it. It feels right. I'm so glad Amy Leach has risen as a representative face of creative nonfiction.

This writing is some of the freshest I've come across. Laugh out loud funny, it creatively engages real research about the natural world and its creatures, while never once feeling heavy-handed.
While a few of the stories were perhaps overly written, I enjoyed the lyrical approach to natural science. A number of interesting anecdotes about the natural world, plants and animals. I read most of this on my commute and was able to read a couple stories each way. Sometimes I'd have to reread in order to understand what was actually being said, but otherwise an enjoyable read.
"Does she have to turn everything into a flower?" --My girlfriend.

But I liked it. If you enjoyed Doyle's "Joyas Voladores", you'd likely enjoy this, too.
Things that Are is an incredibly beautiful reading experience. Leach's ability to look at the extremely ordinary things in life and find the extraordinary things within them is a gift, and this collection of essays is a real treat. You will find yourself reflecting with exquisite interest things as far reaching as the poignancy of Earth's rotation, to the noble resilience of Panda bears. Leach's work combines the every day with her own unique philosophy, and this book has quickly become one of my favorites.

Integral to Leach's charm is her ability to find not only the extraordinary in small and everyday things, but her ability to find the simple humor all around us. You will find yourself laughing at Peru's cartographical location, the surface of the moon, and even the bone-lessness of the sea cucumber. It is this juxtaposition of humor and philosophy that make Leach's book such a masterpiece.

Along this journey of humor and laughter, you will simultaneously become a master of obscure facts. You will wow your friends with your superior knowledge about moths and the solar system, as well as the living habits of the butterfish, one of the jellyfish's good neighbors.

Leach's book is a must read for anyone who enjoys creative non-fiction, smiling, thinking, reading, Pandas, or learning obscure and beautiful facts about the world. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. Likewise, I eagerly await any future literary contributions from Leach, which are bound to be just as poignant, funny, insightful, breathtaking and informative.
Oh, I vacillated between really enjoying this book tremendously and being so annoyed that the fanciful use of language got in the way of the really fascinating information. I wanted to learn more and be entertained less.
Things That Are is so tactile, so observant of the natural world, while jumping around in thought, the way our minds work to make critical connections. Amy Leach, moreover, has a wickedly good sense of humor, and incisive, doubled-edged vision, that at once looks outward while exposing the human eyes doing the interpreting. Crackling intelligence. that guides us to be more aware and more humane. I am now giving this book as a gift to my best friends who love a good read....
